Forever Grateful
Nearly a half century ago, I moved to north central Texas to grow new roots, but a big part of my heart still lives in Indiana where I originally grew up on a 400-acre farm, and also in Tennessee where my music really started taking off. All I ever wanted to do was sing! My father taught me to play guitar, and I sang at church where my mother played piano. I sang wherever and whenever I could, and that took me to Memphis. Although my degree is in elementary ed, I chose the path of a musical career. My life has been an exciting adventure full of music performances, many recordings (including 18 number one hits), and all kinds of remarkable events for which I am blessed and forever grateful.
Career Highlights
There have been so many fun highlights when I look back over my career. I’m humbled to have been nominated or won about fourteen awards including some at the CMA and the ACM. I’ve had the honor to sing before four presidents: President Gerald Ford, President Ronald Reagan, President George H.W. Bush, and President George W. Bush. I had the opportunity to attend a state dinner at The White House, and my voice was sent to the moon on Apollo 12 when I was a jingle singer! I’ve had the privilege of singing on both Elvis’ and Charlie Rich’s albums after their passing. There’s been so many incredible opportunities that have come my way. I figured that if I could sing…I could surely act, so I even accepted some television roles including “Ginny,” a bank robber, in Season 7 Episode 1 of “The Dukes of Hazzard.” If you’ve watched the recent Netflix documentary, “The Greatest Night in Pop”…a behind-the-scenes peek into the legendary 1985 “We Are The World” gathering…you might have caught a little glimpse of me presenting an award to Prince in 1985. These are cherished memories that make me wonder if it has all been a dream!
Texas is Home
No matter where I go or who I get to meet or what crowd I am entertaining, when I return from tour and travels, I am so content to spend down time with my husband, my local friends, and our church. My husband, Jeff Steele, is also my bandleader and drummer. When we’re not on the road, we love tending to our animals. I’m still very much a farm girl! We have twenty chickens and I sell the eggs to local markets! We always enjoy shopping at familiar stores and dining at our favorite restaurants. North central Texas is definitely now “home”…where I relax and where I thrive.
The Texas Theater Event
It’s so special to once again play the recently restored Texas Theater on the square in downtown Waxahachie. This historic treasure has been reborn with its incredible sound system, spectacular lighting, beautiful decor, and also not far from our home. After all these years in the music industry, I have never lost the enthusiasm and pure heart and love of music from my childhood days when all I wanted to do was sing. I hope to see you in the audience on May 18, 2024 or sometime soon!
Much Love,
Janie
