STORY BY MARY CROOK, REALTOR WITH LEGACY REALTY GROUP
Here in the South, we take fall decorating seriously—
even if the thermometer hasn’t gotten the memo. The
first hint of September arrives and suddenly we’re
ready for pumpkins on the porch, mums by the door,
Pumpkin Spice Lattes, and lighting a candle (let’s be
honest…more like five) that smells of apple pie.
But before you buy every pumpkin in Ellis County, a few rules.
RULE NO. 1: MIX YOUR PUMPKINS.
Perfectly matching pumpkins can feel a little too…
grocery store display. Mix traditional orange with
creamy whites, muted greens, heirloom varieties,
and different sizes for that collected-over-time look.
RULE NO. 2: YOUR PORCH DESERVES LAYERS.
Start with your everyday doormat, layer in a patterned
outdoor rug, add oversized planters or mums, and
then tuck pumpkins around them. Think effortless
abundance—not pumpkin avalanche.
RULE NO. 3: BRING FALL INSIDE WITHOUT
REDECORATING THE HOUSE.
You don’t need orange everything. Swap lightweight
throws for chunky textures, bring in warmer woods,
add a few branches to your favorite vase, and trade
summer florals for deeper, moodier stems.
RULE NO. 4: PLEASE LEAVE ROOM
FOR OCTOBER.
September should whisper fall. Save the bats,
skeletons, and jack-o’-lanterns for October. Your
pumpkins can carry you through Thanksgiving.
And the golden rule?
Fall styling should make your home feel warmer, not
busier. A beautiful home doesn’t need more stuff for
every season—it just needs a few thoughtful layers.
After all, Southern hospitality starts before anyone
ever walks through your front door.
